About Rob

Judge Rothenburger has spent his life serving the people of the Bluegrass, through his career choices and community involvement. His commitment to serving Shelby County culminated in his election to Judge-Executive in November 2002 and his re-election in 2006.

During his administration, Judge Rothenburger has restored trust and respect to Fiscal Court by ensuring open communication with the public (open-door meetings for Fiscal Court), making county government accountable to the taxpayers, and delivering county services according to need, based on county-wide plans.

A few of the additional major accomplishments during his administration include:

  • developing the county’s first Road Plan for improvement projects based on traffic and condition;
  • hiring a human resources director to write and manage county employee job descriptions, standardize salaries, manage insurance/benefits, help update county government communications technology;
  • adjusting county personnel wages (to better match surrounding county rates) preventing high turn-over rates, keeping better trained employees (for example, EMS) and reducing new employee training costs;
  • building an EMS station in eastern Shelby County to not only serve the residents but also reduce response times for traffic accidents;
  • increasing Sheriff’s Department funding (1) to hire additional personnel (five deputies and two detectives) for increased patrols and safety, and (2) to provide the department with proper equipment and resources;
  • building a new animal shelter that now takes cats as well as dogs and will meet the county’s future animal control needs;
  • instrumental in leading the effort to hire a county land-use planner;
  • creating a fair method to fund charitable organizations;
  • providing computers for all county government departments to increase efficiency (save tax dollars) and communication; and
  • launching a county government web site for better communications with residents.

Judge Rothenburger has joined many local, regional and statewide organizations, boards and agencies that work with county governments – Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency, Ky. Association of Counties, Ky. Board of Emergency Medical Services (chairman), and Shelby Co. Industrial Foundation – just to name a few. By working with these groups, even serving as an elected officer for some, he has accessed invaluable resources to utilize for the benefit of the county.

Following are the other organizations with which the Judge is involved:

  • Chairman, KIPDA Regional Planning Council
  • Chairman, KIPDA Citizens Corp Council
  • Vice-Chair, KIPDA Regional Transportation Council
  • Commissioner, Ky. Fire Commission
  • Commissioner, Ky. Emergency Response Commission
  • Member, Ky. Department of Homeland Security Training Consortium
  • Member, North Central Health District

Rob Rothenburger earned degrees from Eastern Kentucky University in Emergency Medical Care and Fire Safety Engineering and Technology. He is an accredited Ky. Fire Fighter and Paramedic.
